Sickbeard Manual RSS/Custom Torrent Providers

Note: Since this post was written, TvTumbler was born. Going forward, all new development will be in TvTumbler.

Custom RSS Torrent feedI’ve added experimental support for Custom RSS torrent feeds into my sickbeard fork.

The whole thing should be self-explanatory I think. Currently I use the following feeds myself:

  • TPB – TvTeam: http://rss.thepiratebay.sx/user/7e434ea6455f089db7f0291b3bd1d4db
  • TPB – VTV: http://rss.thepiratebay.sx/user/e395935fa39597e3997b916a295f23e4
  • TPB – ettv: http://rss.thepiratebay.sx/user/0e3b2f46e5892dc5b2aac6dbe548bc27

These are links to the rss feeds for specific users on thepiratebay.se.
Obviously any rss feed that includes links to download torrent files (or public magnet links) will work also.

Other feeds that have been recommended to me (but I don’t use myself) include:

  • BT-chat: http://rss.bt-chat.com/?cat=9
  • monova.org: http://www.monova.org/rss.php?type=catname&id=8

(Please feel free to recommend others in the comments)

Consider this experimental for now. It works for me, but I can’t guarantee that it will work for anyone else.

Check out this post for more details about this fork.

    Awesome feature, thanks!
It works with others as well (e.g. eztv)!

    • #2 by Bricky on April 27, 2013 - 8:28 am

      Glad you like :)
You’re probably better off using the eztv provider (aka EZRSS) for the eztv feed – it is written specifically for it, includes backlog, and has fallbacks in case of failure :)

Will this work with the windows ver of SB?

  3. #5 by McKay on July 21, 2013 - 1:46 am

First of all; mad props for creating this! SickBeard is the best but was not incredibly useful to me till you came along and did this fork.

Here are the feeds I use; my backup feed is all the TV shows from KAT:
    http://kickass.to/tv/?rss=1

My number 1 feed is all the 720p shows from KAT:
    http://kickass.to/usearch/720p%20category%3Atv/?rss=1

      Thanks McKay.
Do these feeds give more than the “KAT” provider does? It looks like they come from the same place.

any way to include private tracker support? such as torrentleech?

    • #8 by Bricky on July 26, 2013 - 10:43 pm

Private trackers are a bad idea, but yes, it’s there – along with a bunch of other built-ins.

Have a look here for a list of what’s available: https://github.com/bricky/Sick-Beard/wiki/Which-Providers%3F

      • #9 by Matt on July 26, 2013 - 11:01 pm

awesome. thanks Bricky. great fork also. I’m switching from midgetspy’s .

why are private trackers a bad idea? (just wondering?!)

      • #10 by Bricky on July 26, 2013 - 11:10 pm

        > why are private trackers a bad idea? (just wondering?!)

Public feeds benefit from being able to use peer sharing techniques like DHT, which ultimately gives you a lot more peers. In my experience at least, unless what you’re downloading is very niche, you’ll get a much faster download from a public tracker.

On any mainstream shows I watch, the public feeds generally have the episodes within an hour or so of them airing (and often they have them within minutes), and they max out my download speed when retrieving them. (it’s only 10 mbit, but still, I can’t complain)

  5. #11 by Josh on July 29, 2013 - 1:37 am

How would you update this? within the client it errors and says can’t access github

  6. #13 by Josh on July 30, 2013 - 1:19 am

    the log states:
    Jul-30 14:13:21 INFO CP Server Thread-7 :: Output: From https://github.com/bricky/Sick-Beard
Jul-30 14:13:21 ERROR CP Server Thread-7 :: Didn’t find indication of success in output, assuming git pull failed

    • #14 by Josh on July 30, 2013 - 1:42 am

ah its ok, it was picking up your wiki commit its resolved now.

      • #15 by Bricky on July 30, 2013 - 6:16 am

        Glad that’s sorted Josh. :)

If it happens again, try to grab a *DEBUG* log – it’s almost impossible to diagnose otherwise

    hi Bricky nice work

are you going to add version were torrents dont have to blackhole. i currently use a fork that supports nzb and torrents with utorrent gui support

    • #17 by Bricky on August 1, 2013 - 6:29 am

      Hi Rhys,

That’s what this fork is mainly. It includes an integrated torrent client.

just saying… nice feature tho adding the custom rss for TPB

  9. #19 by Rhys on August 2, 2013 - 4:09 am

yeah sorry Bricky found the intergated client. should have looked harder before commenting. but on another note on that fork they have torrentz.eu support that searches few torrent providers have you thought about adding this. i would like to help in anyway i can if you are up for it

    Rhys

    • #20 by Bricky on August 2, 2013 - 6:41 am

      Hi Rhys,

Does torrentz.eu have an api? It’s been a while, but when last I looked it needed scraping to be useful.

Have a look at the piece about adding new providers at the end of this page

And the offer to help is appreciated, any place you’d like to help out, please go ahead!

    hey Bricky,

Thanks for this fork looks to have some great features! I’m having a few problems though. When trying to add custom feeds, i get an error pop up – Error trying to load RSS: ‘list’ has no attribute ‘length’. Any idea why or how to fix it?

And also, living in the UK, EZRSS is blocked (along with KAT, and TPB), is there anyway of somehow using proxies or a similar method to get more of these providers working?

    Thanks!

    • #22 by Bricky on August 18, 2013 - 3:46 pm

      Hi Adam,

Could you open an issue on github about the custom rss (including a debug log). It’s probably something small.

I’m open to ideas about the great firewall of the uk! There’s no (useful) proxy of ezrss that I know of (but note that the ‘latest’ feed should still be working – it has several fallbacks)

  11. #26 by AP on August 21, 2013 - 3:15 pm

    Bricky :
    Hi Adam,
Please post any issues on github.
    https://github.com/bricky/Sick-Beard/issues
Understand that fixes for issues must be easily locatable for everyone – otherwise I spend a lot of time repeating myself
(and, on a related note, please include a debug log! )

ok sorry about that, please see the issue added here:

    https://github.com/bricky/Sick-Beard/issues/34

let me know if any more information is needed. thanks!

    Hi Bricky,

I’m keen to install this fork of SB as I only use torrents. However, my linux knowledge is dangerous and I’m struggling to replace the default SB installation on my media server (running Ubuntu Server 12.04). I’ve installed default SB in /home/$USER/.sickbeard. Should I delete the directory completely and start again, or can I run the git clone to overwrite the current installation directory? Thanks in advance.

      Hi Andrew,

The simplest thing is probably to do a clean install, then copy your config.ini and sickbeard.db from your old install.

      Instructions here: https://github.com/bricky/Sick-Beard/wiki/Switching-from-another-version

Thanks for your help. I ended up hosing the entire Ubuntu installation as my lack of Linux knowledge caught up with me (some config errors). Reinstalled and reconfigured the lot and it’s working perfectly now. Thanks for all your work on this project – it’s really appreciated.

Is there a way to get eztv’ ess to work? I currently use eztv manually and almost exclusively for my tv shows and know that a year or so ago there were big probe with sb not getting along with eztv. Just wondering if your branch fixes that.

    Hi.
Is it possible to copy a torrent provider from “Sick Beard for Torrents” to other regular Sick Beard?
I ask because I’d like to use Torrent on “Sick Beard on Android”, so I tried just to copy kat.py from providers directory in my SB for Torrents (Windows) to this one (Android) but it did not work.

    Thanks.
